Gluck's original 'Alceste', to an Italian libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi, was first performed at the Burgtheater, Vienna, on 26 December 1767. For the 1776 Paris production, Gluck made significant revisions to the music and Roullet's libretto altered the original plot.
