The libretto was compiled by Rimsky Korsakov from the bïlina 'Sadko, bogatïy gost' ('Sadko, the Rich Trader') and other ancient ballads and tales with the assistance of Vladimir Vasil'yevich Stasov, Vasily Yastrebtsev, Nikolay Shtrup, Nikolay Findeyzen and Vladimir Nikolayevich Bel'sky.
