Beethoven's three-act opera premiered on 20 November 1805 at the Theater an der Wien, Vienna, and a revised two-act version was first performed on 29 March 1806 at the same theatre. The second and final two-act version, subsequently the most commonly performed, premiered at the Kärntnertortheater, Vienna, on 23 May 1814. Beethoven named his opera 'Leonore', although the theatres performed it under the title 'Fidelio'. The title 'Leonore' is now commonly used to refer to the 1805 and 1806 versions of the opera.
